Pizzanight aka XNA + FUN!

É mais uma nova edição do XNA Pizzanight! Um evento organizado pela comunidade de estudantes do ZoomIn que pretende reunir entusiastas dos jogos na vertende de desenvolvimento e desenho do mesmos.

No próximo dia 4 de Novembro esperamos um lote de jogos que além de demonstrarem as capacidades lógicas dos concorrentes mostram essencialmente a criatividade e talento desta malta!! Portanto é um concurso ideal para todos os amantes da plataforma e do gamming. Programação Reactiva (RX)

Habituados a programar de uma forma imperativa onde estruturamos as acções da mesma forma que “pensamos” é um hábito que provavelmente está em todos os programadores, eu inclusive :P.

Sem dúvida que o conforto desta programação é admirável pois respeita em muito a forma como raciocinamos e a forma como damos a conhecer ao nosso algoritmo essa mesma forma, acaba por parecer que estamos a dar ordem tal como assim nós pensamos:

Entrar_em_casa(preciso Chave, localização daCasa)

3) Autenticar-me com a fechadura utilizando a chave correcta

Num exemplo que fazemos todos os dias estruturamos as nossas acções numa perspectiva imperativa.

Então o que é a programação reactiva? Bom como o nome sugere, trata-se da forma de ficar “reactivo” a determinadas acções.

Muitas das vezes fazemos isso, o bom exemplo é os nossos sentidos sensoriais, se ouvir uma voz interpretada como um comando, reajo e segundo o seu significado no meu contexto assim executo a instrução.

No fundo é exactamente o que se passa com a programação reactiva, codificar determinados contractos para a execução de terminados eventos realizados assincronamente que são injectados por alguém ou por outra entidade e que foram subscritos, isto é, que indicamos para o programa reagir.

Com a Reactive Extensions podemos mudar o paradigma da nossa codificação e usar esta library para subscrevermos a um conjunto de eventos assíncronos. Representamos uma linha de sequência de transmissão de dados com objectos Observables e podemos aplicar queries com LINQ e por fim determinados aquando é que queremos estar á escuta para executar, Schedulers.

Existe bastante documentação sobre as RX para .net inclusivamente para C#, VB e JS com exemplos, tutoriais e vídeos.

Certamente que não iremos mudar o paradigma num estalar de dedos, mas tudo faz sentido em determinados contextos ou em determinadas opções, portanto o uso das Rx Extensions fazem todo o sentido em determinados contextos onde necessitamos de subscrever a eventos externos e realizar operações sobre os mesmos.

Windows 8 –> a new approach

Nowadays with a lot of different devices, tablets, mobile, touch screens, pc, laptops, desktops, an so on… and what we’ve being seen with users interactions? touch, social networks, integrated information, integrated authentication and a many new types of information gathering with new waves that internet has created. So if we look on new developments we see that touch and information integration are on the top! If we look for iOS, android and Windows phone 7 there are the most innovation centers on this new trend.

So now what we can expect on the new Microsoft’s OS? that’s right a OS that approaches on this new type of devices, mobility and user interaction. So with the upcoming new windows version, windows 8, that looks that windows team is concerned and is developing a OS that reach this main goals. Touch, interaction and information integration.

In the following video is what we can see, a new wave on the windows that is familiar for all of us developers, and for the common user that expects a new wave of interface and behaviors'. It’s look like very much of Windows Phone 7 Metro design and of course! Is what we’ve expected a similar UI and behavior of a new trend that Microsoft wants for his new products.

For the common user, it’s a new and fresh UI that can leverage the windows potential and bring new services and new type of information consumption and that is great! Is what we see in the major software manufactures. And for the developers the news are pretty great, yeah! Looks like that we can build app for the new windows 8 “shell” or “metro shell hub”  with the same technologies that we use everyday. Html 5, javascript, css 3 and Silverlight are the main platforms for this new wave, and of course these techs allow us to build a new type of look and feel on our apps!

Besides this new trend that Microsoft is implementing on their client OS’s my main feature that I expect is that with this developers are able to leverage theirs apps, services, integration systems and their potential into a new level! That’s right we are in 2011! for god sake!  

Spend a few minutes to see the first public demo, and start imagine what can be expected in the next mile stone on next PDC in this fall.

PS: Although this new shell or main metro desktop style we can see that the “traditional” windows 7 is behind, of course we still need backward compatibility, and yet we need to run our Visual Studio boy lool.

Podemos ver um primeiro sneak peak do Windows 8 e da sua nova Shell que certamente tem as suas semelhanças com a interface da XBOX, ZUNE e do WP7 o que irá permitir uniformizar a nova UI dos produtos da gigante de software. Microsoft SIR 2010

Microsoft has launched last week the Security Intelligence Report of 2010, available at www.microsoft.com/sir , so the great thing about this 88 pages of report isn’t the full reading… unless you have time for that. The major thing that I want to highlight is the main areas that microsoft has dedicated allot of time and internal investment.

For this year the main areas were: Team security concerns; main threats analysis on product and on company; thread analysis by region or country and risk management – new methods and protection guidelines.

O Microsoft SIR (Security Intelligence Report, www.microsoft.com/sir ) 2010 saiu na semana passada, é um relatório sobre a análise anual das múltiplas componentes de segurança da empresa. O interessante do documento não é a sua leitura extensiva, mas sim, a análise sobre as múltiplas componentes de segurança que a gigante se preocupa nas quais dedica imenso tempo e dinheiro.

As principais áreas deste ano estudadas são: Análise da segurança na perspectiva individual de cada equipa; Análise sobre as principais ameaças de segurança, sejam em produto como na empresa; Análise de ameaças externas por região ou país; Gestão de risco - novos métodos e regras para protecção do software e das pessoas.

III Meeting XAMLPT Done –> IV coming!

The XAMLPT community had their III meeting at past 19th of May at Microsoft Portugal! We’ve gather some members and some new ones that want to aim their knowledge in all xaml implementations like in Silverlight, WPF, Surface and Windows Phone 7 development.

Besides the few members that accepted to be present at site, we’ve promoted a fluent and interesting discussions about the Html5 Vs Silverlight, the new features of IE9 and 10 and what developers should expect about the almost overlap between this two major technologies.

It’s was a pleasant time spent around this themes including how Azure and all new Microsoft’s software ecosystem can help new developments with xaml based apps.

A comunidade teve a sua III reunião XAMLPT no passado dia 19 de Maio na Microsoft Portugal! Reunimos alguns membros da comunidade e também alguns novos, que querem aprofundar os seus conhecimentos em todas as tecnologias que usam o XAML, como no desenvolvimento em Silverlight, WPF, Surface e Windows Phone 7.

Além dos poucos membros que aceitaram estar presentes no local, foi promovido um debate fluente e interessante sobre: HTML5 vs Silverlight, as novas funcionalidades do IE9 e 10 e o que os programadores devem esperar sobre a iminente “sobreposição” entre estas duas grandes tecnologias.
É foi um momento agradável gasto em torno deste tema, incluindo Azure e todo o novo ecossistema de software da Microsoft da forma como podem ajudar os novos desenvolvimentos das aplicações baseadas em XAML.

Feed Digest–Fev/March 2011

So for the last few days I’ve been seeing a lot of new and cool stuff being launched so I’ve gathering some quite nice links from my feed list with some comments. Hope that you can enjoy.

Let’s see:

• PHP Manager for IIS now with multiple languages
• ASP.NET MVC 3 Video training – It’s looks like that MVC came for stay… It’s almost that Microsoft has flashed back into asp traditional scripting pages…. looks great
• Efficient Paging with WebGrid ASP.NET MVC
• Identifying Worker Process – IIS 6 and 7 -  for those who develop websites this is a awesome tip in order to help on site debug if you are on a remote environment
• (PT) Converter Dados de um SqlDataReader para uma List <> Linq – nunca fui muito fã do linq e ultimamente isso tem se vindo a comprovar…. pelo menos em cenários onde a complexidade da BD é anormal… todavia fica mais uma dica para quem usa nos seus projectos.
• RIP ZUNE!! – I’m not surprised with this…. cause if we look on MS strategy on this device now with the WindowsPhone 7 devices, it’s a dead of a product… who want’s a great media device without phone features? Although if we look on apple strategy they kept the iPod Touch among with the iPhone, and the great price difference may justify that for sure! But on Zune it’s different… you can buy a full WP7 device with all zune hardware (even better) more cheap then the actual Zune HD… so I’m not surprised with this… But we must have to give a BIG THANKS for the delightful great work and UI improvements that lead MS to create the great WP7 device!! But they will continue on Zune services and Marketplace, without that WP7 devices get dead also.
• Simulating rain with Silverlight – a great article to teach how we can simulate rain with silverlight using some of pro tips and algorithms. 
• IE 9 It’s out tonight! And MS provides a new update for VirtualMachine Environments for IE run in full hardware acceleration – that’s right! IE9 came out this night…. It’s good to know that MS have invested a lot on his browser and how we keeps among his competitors, the new features and hardware acceleration are one of the most grateful features that users were expected! let’s see how goes with downloads and feedback.
• VS 2010 SP1 out! – Yep, VS2010 see’s his first SP that fixes some bugs reported by developers and introduces some features for WP7 development among more extensibility tools.

I left one last feed for last… about iPad 2… just to refer that in the first weekend apple sold more than a million devices… and what that means? Look’s like we have a new market of users that browse the internet on new device type! The tablet! they come to stay, numbers says that and if you try one you also may say the same! So Apple is driving one product on a new market share and let’s see how others strategy to live among this new users tablet based.

So there are some new opportunities for developers on this platform, even those websites based in HTML 5 can now have a new horizon with this new kind of net browsing.

A week of WP7

I all! It’s been a week and some days that I have changed my primary phone from a wp6.5 for a wp7 device! I needed a new phone that can sustain my phone operations and business needs like, mail, twitter and so on! I looked on market for the many options that you can find today between android, IPhone, BB and Nokia, and WP7.

So I bought the LG E900, for a reasonable price that I think is reasonable price for a smart device, about 320€ and on open network mode. And my first impressions are very good better than I was expecting, after a lot rumors about the WP7 OS, and some features… but no! a nice, simple and very quick device!

For a user like me that came from the 6.5 version into this new one… it’s a BIG step! And for that I think that Microsoft deserves a congratulation because the change is huge and it’s a huge great change, on many aspects, the UI, look and feel, spee

Yeah But what are the firsts impressions?

Fast and Reliable

Yep, one of the things that I always didn't like on my old wp6 was the operation speed…. dam! If I have urgency on a operation or a simple call… dam sometimes took some time for the phone can process and can show the things… but is OS fault? Not really the hardware that I has isn’t great… a cheap phone a cheap performance.

With WP7 one of the most enlighten features and behavior is the phone speed! It’s awesome how the hone behaves between menus, mails, messaging, phone calls… really fast and those operations has been reliable, if I press to end a call the call has ended! So what I’m talking about is those behaviors that some time we feel that the phone don’t react has we expect, but with this new one has been a great experience on that!

Easy to adapt

Dam… this is an aspect that I thought to have some issues…. tap on screen and write on such a small keyboard… I was wrong, it’s nice, not perfect because it requires that you learn where to tap and how to, but after a few days I was able to tap anywhere in any key and get some speed like typing on a real keyboard, even if you are working on a landscape or on a portrait mode. So typing it’s not a pain like I thought and you have a assistant on words to improve the type speed. Although the Portuguese isn’t available, yet.

Another great feature is the UI, yep, it’s a nice interface that very intuitive and besides all animations that look great at the beginning, they not came to be a slower factor when you have rush on phone operations., and that it’s great and needed! WP7 offers a great interface with nice animations and behaviors but they don’t slow your operations on the device.

Also the menu system and the live titles are simple but very functional, they can be a factor to distract but can give you a updated alert and some useful info. Operating on system settings is an easy operation because you can select and slide the many options and that give more speed on those operations and configurations. I like that!

The screen is also a great looking, bright and clear so provide a nice and defined image, so you can visualize some cool videos even those in HD. this is a feature of the hardware, but it’s nice to feel the wedding between the OS and the hardware it self.

A long way to go

yep, beside all those great features and great apps that you can find on market place, there are some thing that Microsoft has to update or change. Those things don’t keep you away from the device but can be a little pain lool . The major is the fact that you need live account where marketplace has been launched otherwise you wont be enable to use and download the apps, so for that here in PT we must wait, but even so you can still use your regular account so is a nice workaround and you can still use, it’s a matter of time  

Another thing is the famous coy and paste, that I believe that can be corrected fast and has been announced for the next update, because it’s a simple OS operation so MS just has to deploy that. But to be honest in all operations that I made on the phone I just found that I didn’t needed of that looool and that is curious right? that means why they forgot, the interface and the options leads you for no reason of copy anything…. lolol

About the apps, one thing that I’ve noticed that the phone some times can’t load some app… and that needs to be reviewed… if I open zune than maketplace than came back to zune.., it wont load… I don’t know if the I’m only used that felt that, but maybe with the next update can fixe this thing because it a powerful device but we still have those kind of issues… with a lot of processor, ram and why this stills happen…

I also noticed some little minor bugs or interface issues, but they are so small that don’t disturb you on phone operation. But the phone miss some options, like ring tones, and notification's sound and alert options, another thing that I believe the next update can fix that.

Another downside is the battery life… for a regular user like me you can not expect more then a day and half to recharge again. Of course that can depend of the option, like wifi,gps,cell data but those features are needed to be a great device so a little more powerful battery is more than welcome!

Overall

in a global I’m super pleasant with this device! in all aspects, fast, reliable, useful, with all apps that I need, with a great behavior and if you want you can almost leave the laptop and sit back with wp7 and do some daily operations.

It’s more than easy to use and in the pocket you forget him, yeh it’s thin and less weighted that I thought, again it’s the hardware, but in a overall everything of this counts! right?

So what I’m happy is the reasonable price that cost, the great UI, screen and what WP7 allow you to do!! even gaming on him!

When I look on the market and regarding all options of today, android, Iphone, or WP7, I’m happy that I can assume that I bought a powerful device, with 16gb which is more than good for a phone I think (because for music I have the Zune and the Ipod), with a great OS that can be better than an android phone and share the same stage of an Iphone.

I recommend it! It’s not so expensive, it’s a light device and the WP7 looks amazing when you are operating with it. Can help you out with your business and daily operations and can be a intensive phone for calls and notes. Even has the MS with full attentions on those updates and new features, so I’m more than happy because I spent a few money and this device can respond and respect my needs more than the previously device.

I just hope that MS can continue with the OS evolution and guarantee that can provide more functions and a better marketplace so the phone can really get a great player on this market.

WP7 I recommend it, and if you didn’t try yet go and surprise your self

Back on Track

Olá a todos! Já faz algum tempo que não tenho usado o blog… é verdade…. eu admito. Contudo os desafios profissionais e alguns pessoais, têm me mantido afastado de umas das minhas actividades favoritas.

Mas para este ano, tentarei mudar a tendência e voltar a partilhar com a comunidade o que sinto de valor acrescentado para o fazer. Para tal  começo por deixar a minha Feed Digest para este início de ano que parece ser bastante agitado no que toca ás novas tecnologias e gadgets.
